Why do I have air in my water lines?

By Matthew Elliott

Why do I have air in my water lines?

The main cause of air in the water lines is water system maintenance. Cutting off the water supply for a period of time can allow air to enter the system. (Running faucets briefly usually resolves this problem.) Maintenance work on the water main may also introduce air into your system.

How to get rid of air in water lines?

Allow the water to run until every faucet is no longer sputtering. Flush all toilets until they too have a steady flow of water. Turn the faucets off one by one once there is a steady flow of water coming from all of them. A steady flow of water means there is no longer any air in the water lines.

What to do when air comes out of your Pipes?

You don’t want to turn the faucets on full force; just enough to let the water and air escape. You don’t need to shut down the water to your house, as the water flowing through the water lines pushes the air out the open faucets and fixtures. Air in the pipes will not damage a home’s plumbing.

How can I Fix air in line in my toilet?

Remember to turn on the hot and cold water supply and turn the faucet handles to the maximum. When you approach the toilets, remove the covering of the tank and pull at the plunger located inside. You might need a screwdriver to do this. This ensures a full-strength outlet of water.

How can I get air out of my house?

Work in a clockwise manner from the main water supply throughout the house. Open each hot and cold water faucet a half turn to let air and water escape. Repeat this process for toilets, showers, tubs, the washing machine and dishwasher. By turning on these fixtures and appliances, it pulls the air out of the lines.

What causes air in water lines?

One of the most common causes of air in a water supply line is a possible leak somewhere in the water supply line pipes. If this causes the problem, then fixing the leak can solve the dilemma easily.

What causes air to come out of the faucets?

  • allow water to drain out of well piping and back into the well at the end of a pump-on cycle and to
  • thus also
  • maintaining water pressure in the building between pump-on cycles

Why is air coming out of hot water faucet?

Air coming out of the hot and cold faucets is caused by air getting into the system from somewhere! Air is usually more prevalent on the hot water side because it settles to the top of the hot water tank and comes out first when the hot water is turned on.
