What is human reovirus?

By William Rodriguez

What is human reovirus?

Reovirus. Reovirus is a nonenveloped double-stranded RNA virus. This virus was initially not known to be related to any specific disease, and so was named Respiratory Enteric Orphan virus. However, some members of the reovirus family have been shown to cause mild illnesses such as diarrhea [5,30].

What causes arenavirus?

Arenaviruses are shed into the environment in the urine, saliva, or droppings of infected rodent hosts. People become infected by breathing in the virus after rodent urine, droppings, or nesting materials are stirred up, such as during cleaning.

What type of virus is an arenavirus?

An arenavirus is a bisegmented ambisense RNA virus that is a member of the family Arenaviridae. These viruses infect rodents and occasionally humans.

How do you treat arenavirus?

What is the treatment? There is no specific treatment for most of these illnesses. Some of the illnesses, such as Lassa fever, respond to anti-viral therapies if they are treated during the first week of illness. Supportive therapy, including managing secondary bacterial infections, may also help reduce mortality.

Can humans get reovirus?

Reovirus infections occur often in humans, but most cases are mild or subclinical. Rotaviruses, however, can cause severe diarrhea and intestinal distress in children, and lab studies in mice have implicated orthoreoviruses in the expression of coeliac disease in pre-disposed individuals.

How do you treat reovirus in chickens?

(Tenosynovitis, Reoviral Arthritis) There are no treatment options, other than general supportive care, for birds once clinically affected. Prevention of clinical signs relies on the generation of a protective, serotype-specific immune response. Reoviruses are ubiquitous in commercial poultry worldwide.

How is Junin virus transmitted?

MODES OF TRANSMISSION: Human exposure to Junin virus is believed to occur mainly through inhalation of aerosolised body fluids (blood, saliva) or excretions (urine, faeces) of infected rodents, typically during agricultural work(1,3,4,11,13).

How is paramyxovirus transmitted?

Transmission is by droplets or direct contact. The virus infects the ciliated epithelial cells of the respiratory mucosa and disseminates locally. Disease is caused partly by immunopathologic antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity.

What is an Old World virus?

The Old World (OW) arenavirus complex includes several species of rodent-borne viruses, some of which (i.e., Lassa virus, LASV and Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, LCMV) cause human diseases. Most LCMV and LASV infections are caused by rodent-to-human transmissions.

Is Lassa fever real?

Lassa fever is an animal-borne, or zoonotic, acute viral illness. It is endemic in parts of West Africa including Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and Nigeria. Neighboring countries are also at risk, as the animal vector for Lassa virus, the “multimammate rat” (Mastomys natalensis) is distributed throughout the region.

How is Machupo virus spread?

Transmission: Machupo virus is spread through aerosolized, food-borne, or direct contact of virus particles. These particles result from the saliva, urine, or feces of Calomys callosus, the field mouse reservoir of the virus.

What are symptoms of reovirus?

Infants and young children most commonly have fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and (occasionally) dehydration. Vomiting, usually short-lived, can occur before or after the onset of diarrhea. Symptoms of an apparent respiratory infection may be present.
