How can you tell the size of a screw?

How to Determine Screw Size & Thread Count

  1. Lay the screw down on a flat surface.
  2. Place a steel rule down the axis of the screw.
  3. Count the number of thread gaps within 1 inch of the screw.
  4. Divide the count of thread gaps into the length.
  5. Place the screw on a flat surface.

How are the different types of fasteners identified?

Fasteners are identified by four or five attributes; Type, Material, Diameter, Length, and Thread Pitch or Count (machine thread fasteners only). This page describes what these attributes represent. Information on how they are written can be found on our How Fastener Measurements Are Notated page.

How is the length of a fastener measured?

How fastener length is measured varies based on the type of head. As a general rule, the length of fasteners is measured from the surface of the material, to the end of the fastener.

What’s the difference between a screw and a fastener?

*Note: Bolts are fasteners that require a nut or pre-tapped hole to be installed. Screws use their threads to provide their own holding power. The terms in the industry are commonly mixed so sometimes you will see something that is called a screw or a bolt that is actually the opposite. Example: Lag Bolts and Lag Screws are the same thing.

What kind of fasteners are used with flat washers?

These washers are round outer diameter thin plates with a center hole punched to the size of the bolt or screw. Flat washers are used to distribute loads of threaded bolts, screws and nuts evenly as the fastener is tightened. Military standard (MS) flat washers go through extensive inspection for chemical]

Where can I test my fasteners for size?

Most (if not all) hardware stores have sizing plates that you can test your fasteners on, with both male and female options, as well as imperial and metric. Lowe’s has one off to the side at the very end of the aisle (pictured above). It’s almost sort of hidden, so I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of DIYers didn’t know it was there to begin with.

When do you need to know the size of screws and bolts?

If you have some stray screws and bolts (a.k.a. fasteners) lying around and aren’t quite sure what size they are, or if you need to replace a missing bolt on a piece of machinery and need to know what size to get, here are some methods to easily figure that out.

Where can I get size charts for bolts and washers?

The Bolt Depot has some excellent charts that you can print off for both imperial and metric fasteners, as well as nuts and washers. The important thing here is that you need to print them out at actual size. So if your printer has an option like “Fit to Page”, you’ll need to uncheck that so there’s no downscaling.
